They clearly wanted to pay some sort of homage to the taillights on the current-gen Boxster/Cayman cars, but they didn't have the guts to do anything more than that. It will be interesting to see how the taillights work in the real world, but this photo doesn't impress.

Those rocket-fin taillights work on the Boxster because they're large enough to be a prominent design element. You don't want to go halfway with an approach like that, the way Mazda did here.
