Women went through puberty later, too, especially if they didn't get enough to eat. Probably the upper class were more likely to be fertile at 13 and up.

It seems to me you didn't need to learn as much to be able to support yourself and kids, even just 50 years ago. My great-grandpa had a 7th grade education and he had a job making good money. To get a similar job today you'd probably need high school plus a two-year or four-year college degree. That has to delay…
