From what I read above it sounds like he was given the money to buy the gun himself. So basically the money was a gift and he bought a gun with it. Also he might have had more than one gun. He bought the one he did the shooting with himself.

My favorite is when people talk about getting them to “protect” their home like life is some kind of fucking lethal weapon movie.
