Subverting expectations or subverting fantasy tropes is not an excuse for poor character development or plotting.

Hasn’t most of the point of the story been to subvert fantasy tropes, insomuch as this is the subversion in that it didn’t really matter?

Are you referring to the inmate with the squawky BAWSTUN accent? She felt more like a sketch comedy character. She wouldn’t have been out of place in those SNL sketches with Rachel Dratch and Jimmy Fallon.
