I think the Mariner character is going to be what makes or breaks the show. One episode in and she’s already treading that line of being exhausting. Hell, that’s not true, she is exhausting, but they were able to level that out somewhat by showing that she’s capable at what she does. She’s like if the first season of… Read more

I’m pretty sure it would be against regulations for a child (especially an adult child who is also an officer) to serve under a parent on a ship.
Found a leaked version- watch before it gets yanked!
WTF, is Kinja broken again or did io9 just get hacked?
So there is actually an in cannon reason why Klingons looked like Asin villain stereotypes in TOS and had crazy ridges in STTNG. It has to do with genetic experimentation of one tribe of Klingons. I’m guessing this is happening simultaneously with the new ship stuff.
The Klingons... the Klingons. Sigh. I haven’t been this disappointed with such a stupid redesign since the Kilrathi from Wing Commander went from being badass tiger-people in the videogames to these weird gross rat creatures in the film. Easiest thing not to fuck up... and yet, here we are.

I get that this is the way that lighting has gone... but the fact then that we have bright lights shining everywhere that…
Velour?!
This! So much! Why place a show in the classic timeline if you are going to completely ignore its design philosophy? Also: This looks like super generic contemporary sci-fi design. Star Trek used to be special, distinctive, I don’t see any of that in this trailer...
I thought a little bit of that might actually be a more promising about the discovery front — they talk about investigating things as if it’s their core reason for existence, and there’s some cool spacewalk visuals. I’m hopeful about that part!
These don’t look better or more advanced, they just look BUSIER, which is what most Hollywood production design looks like now. Read more
The trailer shows them encountering weird unknown objects at the edge of Federation space.
My first thought is that they are on Vulcan. Their clothing looks vaguely like Vulcan desert wear, and they have advanced technology right in plain view, so I don’t think they are trying to disguise themselves in a pre-Warp society. Read more
Most importantly, can we talk about the return of production designer Akira Yoshimura? He played Sulu in the original Belushi timeline. That should be a story in itself.
