I disagree. They had no budget and tons of imagination and style. It spawned an almost fifty year billion+ $$ franchise. It could not have been mostly cheese. Abrams Trek created nothing.

The Daleks aren't great villains because they were ever actually scary or dangerous. They're great because they're fun and lovable, and it takes a lot of imagination to make a villain that can't climb stairs or turn doorknobs lovable.
