My parents used to hang their wash to dry in the basement in the coldest half of the year and outside the rest of the year.

My dryer's duct is a 12 inch straight tube from back of dryer to outside - no bends, no flex duct. Easy to clean out, very efficient. We did it that way when we moved the washer and dryer from the basement to the upstairs.
