Sorry, should have included my source:

Yup, there are others which are further segregated from the road, but a regular lay-by looks just like that. I would class it in the “emergency use only” category, same as a shoulder, and particularly next to a dual carriageway where the traffic a few inches to your right could be travelling at 70+ mph and not paying

Comments on stories like these are always better with images attached... so here’s a lay-by on the A1:

I’m going to go with Rolls Royce Phantom DHC in the background, Bob.

I particularly like the way the Ford stooges cut to the interior shot of the Mustang to conceal the point at which the Stigmatist ran onto the grass and almost lost it...

Dickie was driving a different car (787B)

Dickie was driving the 787B, not the 767B, so he’s OK.

It’s BSA of some description. Possibly a Rocket.

5 of Mr Mullin’s cars are there by special request.

Hi!

Now playing

I remember watching Ed Moses on the Superstars TV program, where he was up against a bunch of top athletes from all disciplines. On the obstacle course, he generally made them look second-rate at best.

This will be a very hard act to follow. Not just this article, but the whole Top Gear franchise.

I nominate the Bond Bug.

Surely you mean Alfaguar?

Well, at least I don’t think it’s quite as ungainly as the 5 door MINI...

Large articulated trucks are speed-limited to 56mph in the UK, so this hypothetical scenario is unlikely for more than a couple of miles. Of course, if lane 1 is full, it is safer to occupy lane 2 and leave lane 3 for emergency vehicles ;)

I believe the device you are referring to is called a “kick plate”.

I have realised that there is a difference in interpretation between the US and UK regarding what constitutes the “inside lane”. In the UK, it’s the lane closest to the exit, in the US it’s the lane closest to the median/central reservation. I’m referring to the UK interpretation. Lane 1, in other words.

In your country, yes.

It’s common courtesy to do this for larger vehicles, but it’s not entirely legal, as it can be ambiguous. Some people flash their lights to be polite and helpful, others do it when they’re angry. Some flash to let others through, others flash to say “I’m coming through!”. I try to avoid it for those reasons unless I’m
