The problem with contacting the D of HS is that they hear "Power Steering Pump failure at 68,000 miles" and they think of when the serp belt came off of their old Chevy pickup. Totally different game.
Every Gen 1 Mini owner went through this. The key is to check that cooling fan OFTEN. (The little computer fan that keeps the pump cool. Ya know, the one 3" off the ground under the bumper where it gets soaked every time it rains.)
