Problem for me is that I grew up in Europe. None of what you described above happened. Our family car was a Yellow 240d wagon when I was little. I loved that car. We also had a Opel Kadet diesel, then and Astra TDI, a Volvo 740 wagon, etc. None of them were vans. None of them were ugly or embarrassing.
I agree. But outdated VW reliability issue concerns are equally inaccurate. They aren’t Toyota/Lexus reliable. But nothing is. They are fine. Particularly late in the model cycle, where they seem to be rock solid.
I’ve yet to need it on my GTI and thats 7 years old.
