The older games were complex, but nothing a Mass Effect fan couldn't handle. If you did take the time to play Kingdom Hearts this plays just like it.
I dont think it has anything to do with not being able to learn the ATB system, but the fact that the mass audience they want to appeal to is more interested in this style combat. along the lines of a kingdom hearts style game.
It is approachable it handles like a more robust kingdom hearts I thinks the best way to describe it
