Sadly I don't think you are being pessimistic. The Star Wars trilogy was a bit of a fluke and a big chunk of defining features didn't even come from Lucas.

I think it was hard to say, it looked like it could be a bog standard cover based shooter but I was holding out hope it would pull one out of the bag.

Personally I liked Shadowrun Returns but it felt like it was about half the length it should have been. Character progression wise it would be like playing Fallout 1 or 2 till you got combat armour and a decent rifle.

Yeah it is ridiculously boring and has no feedback. Not to mention a load of the NPCs have abilities that can one shot you and at times give no indication that they are going to happen.

I don't think Yahtzee is a very good example, only a cretin would think "hmm I am interested in this game, let me make a decision on whether I should buy it based on someone that heavily criticises even games they enjoy"

Yeah it is definitely better, but I don't think it is made any easier to arrange by the fact that lots of modern games don't support LAN games and in some cases will actively block you trying to play online if you are on the same IP address :(

Ah man this really makes me miss the Playing Fields in London. A lot of LAN cafes sadly died out when they introduced high speed broadband and it killed the atmosphere.
