I’d be very surprised if modern automatics got worse gas mileage than a manual. They’re literally programmed to get the best gas mileage possible. Especially with them having like 8 or more gears now.

You’re missing some things. Weight of all of the fluids in an ICE drivetrain (gas too). You’re also missing out on some of the sound deadening for the engine bay as that won’t be needed anymore. I’m willing to bet a large amount of sound deadening can be removed now that was formerly used to cover up the drivetrain.
