How sad! Some Germans find it a bit odd too, but most don't even bat an eyelash. Especially East Germany has a long history of nudist and naturalist clubs, and nude bathing was pretty much the norm there.

As a German, I find this very un-news worthy (though the events/talks do sound interesting!). Don't you have naturalists/nudist groups in America? Even the super prudish New Zealand South Island city I lived in has a weekly "nude swim" at the public pool. *shrugs
