This is the Wii U equivalent of 3DS games that don't do 3D.

I'm on PC and only played the game with a gamepad (dualshock 3) and I have no problem running CT as a Warrior and doing Coil regularly with my static group. I never once got a bad comment on my tanking and most people probably don't even know I'm using a gamepad.
