Plugins are software that extend or improve the capabilities of other software. In this case, the Nik software extends or improves the capabilities of Photoshop. Usually, plugins need the host software to operate, but some can function independently.

It looks like a few of the filters can be run as stand alone applications that you can open images from and save the image after you’re done with changes. I was also able to get the filters to work in photoshop c3 by manually copying filters to the plugin folder.

Actually you don’t need photoshop....i downloaded the whole package and can use all 7 plugins on their own.

Only because the install doesn’t officially put them there. It is possible to extract the plugins and get them to work.

The plugins are (or were for the version I have) .8bf. So they should be usable in Gimp and other software as well.
