Again, you're focusing on the short term. Ford's entire life was a grand social project, with great rewards, but hardly one that came without both risk and failure along the way. Claiming there was no risk trivializes his life's story.

It made sense to Ford. His goal was to transform the people who manufactured automobiles into the people who would buy them. His hope was that they wouldn't buy a competing brand, tho :)
While the cost-cutting move to turn employees into customers overnight made sense for both parties outright, the risk was in the long term. History shows it was worth taking, of course.
