I think the villains in this are much more complex than they were in Newsflesh. That being said, there's only one clear cut "bad guy" and a bunch of folks in the gray "maybe bad guy, maybe not" area.

Point 9 makes no sense - Starfleet Academy is located in San Francisco. At least *some* of the crew would have had to attend the Academy before being shipped out to the fringes of known space.
