Kirk, I loved those letters when I read them, and I've probably referred people to them a half dozen times already. It's a beautiful piece, and I wish more people would do that kind of feature about more classic games (maybe not quite as long, though :) ).

To me, Midgar is the best and most memorable parts of the game. The rest is much more cliche'd.

I usually find myself needing to grind before the giant snake, and before Wutai. I think it's just a few levels, though.
