The Witcher 1 has a lot of noire elements, especially the quest “What Lies Below” which has Geralt team up with an expy of hard-boiled detective Philip Marlowe.

Just like the player characters the NPC enemies need to roll to attack and use skills. “Difficulty” means what the likelihood of you doing something is, the higher the difficulty the more successes/the higher the number that you have to roll to hit/perform an action.
