It still amuses me that they can’t get their head around review scores, as if the dichotomous value that had been using was any different.

Actually experimental designs have more causal power than quasi-experimental which in turn have more than correlational. You should also know that aspect is independent of longitudinal vs cross sectional, correlational and experimental designs can both be longitudinal or cross-sectional.
