it's impossible to understate how poorly this stuff reflects on the US to outsiders. a while ago I had someone from Kenya ask me about all the cop shootings going on back home, saying how horrible it is. you know things are bad when someone from Kenya shows you sympathy for shit happening in your home country.

I use a phone trick for names. I tell them I'd love to add them in my contact list, and ask how to spell their name. It has gotten me out of that situation half a dozen times now at work, and saved me from embarrassment when I blanked on my neighbor's name but remembered her dog's name.

One thing I have learned is that if you are going to combine finances and bank accounts, make sure both have a separate account to put money in as a "buy whatever you want account." It could be for random purchases or gifts.
