I know it takes me almost a day to switch between "business mode" to "design mode" during product development phases. If I need to push around some HTML or CSS, it takes a seriously painful day to get back in the rhythm of coding. So its not surprising he'd be rusty, but its a strange thing when you sit down to work

I agree with #1. The problem is that #2 is causing the death of the manual transmission in the first place. If #2, then they have already done #3 by default.
