This is exactly what caused me to stop reading Sonic The Hedgehog a few months back. I had to get into Mega Man AND Sonic Boom to even know WTF was going on, so I just up and quit.

old school fps were filled with backtracking...that’s all collecting keys were lol. Don’t act new fps are worse in that regard.

Considering that there hasn’t really been an interesting FPS since HL2, being better than what is out currently is a low bar. Doom’s reveal was one of the most disappointing things I’ve seen for a while.
