Blizz has other non FTP games that are also supported for a long time, i.e. D3. You get the basic game and expansion and the game goes on and on.

Exactly. They never planned. And it is just wrong that they never did. Blizz always had great single player experiences, plus a PvE element would help them flesh out the game and give lore to the players really fast.
