The 4.2 and 5.2 engines offered in the R8 are so great though. I don't mind recycling certain parts if the product is exceptional from the start.

I'm not sure a stock 'Vette will be able to run with the new McLaren, but you can't really expect it to given the price difference. It's still probably the best performance bargain though. 'Vette with $10-20k invested can run past just about anything.

This is precisely the reasoning behind it. Much of the hard work has already been done.

The difference is, you can't typically drive those other cars home. I'm not sure what the exact rules are, but the event is broken into classes similar to the way other racing events are divided.
