As long as the pokemon are from two different regions, it doesn't matter. A foreign ditto is preferred because you can breed anything you catch with it and you'll have a chance of getting that one shiny.

I've never used anything other than a pokeball. Ever. I found it to be stupid and making a core part of the game easier. Every legendary, every critter, every piece of degenerate shit that wouldn't stay in the fucking ball and killed 5 of my team.

They fixed that in this gen because if it comes from a foreign country it says what country next to their name. It will say JPN if it's from Japan or GER if it's Germany etc etc. It's very nice.
