When you look at games that chose the 'photorealistic' direction things still look plastic and shiny— just like if they toys. I'd like to think as the photorealistic style as if we were playing pretend with little action figures (isn't that what we are basically doing?) except the imagination is rendered for us.

I'd add that the art direction has a lot to do with how nice this game looks as well, I mean if style was set to look like rainy old Seattle rather than rainy old neon lit Hong Kong it would be a lot less impressive.
