What do people have against a wireless (or wired) keyboard on the lap and a mouse on the arm rest or the spot next to them on the couch? This works for me for gaming and non-gaming PC uses alike.

I'm with you - I would rather read the facts myself and come to a conclusion. Recommendations are for people who don't have time to/would rather not read the published studies themselves and draw their own conclusions. The way this is worded it does really come off as an erring on the side of caution thing.
