I had trouble on that rift too

This is exactly what I did. It worked out great.

Same, Level 7 at the moment, and ran into that rift while doing some side quests. Wondered how the fuck I was supposed to close that thing after running away as fast as I could and then realized maybe I should actually go to a new area or do a story mission.

If you can take two mages with dispel the rifts in the Hinterlands are trivial... I cleared them all at around level 6-7 by preventing 1/2 of the demonds from spawning in the first place.

The one by the river near the camp? I kept getting one shotted by the demons. :( Then I came back with Iron Bull and murdered everyone.

Yep, every new area is 'go get campsites'. You do most of the non-collection type quests, and can come back (easily) if necessary.
