I'm going to guess that steering rack pressure and return lines are hooked up in reverse, or the assist valve in the rack has an issue.
This also happened to me, but in a friend's Cadillac SRX.
Same deal, I hit a large bump on the Belt Parkway service road just south of JFK and all of a sudden I watch all of the gauges drop down to 0.
