They released the uncut subbed version of CCS on DVD in the early 2000s. I started collecting them but had to stop, because this was back in the days when DVDs were still $30 a piece and you only got 3-4 episodes a disk.

Trigun is another awesome show to recommend to an anime newbie. Great soundtrack, memorable characters, moving story. Plus the dub still holds up pretty well, IMO, so if your newbie is scared of subtitles it’s an easy one to start with.
