I carry a 20-inch long piece of rope in my laptop bag. I can set this in a semicircle under the laptop, and it holds it a bit less than 1/2 inch above the table, for better air circulation. The tabletop is also cooler afterwards. The rope is easy to carry in the bag, and doesn’t scratch anything.
