While it doesn’t kill the hype for me (there are plenty of levels that don’t contain awkward realistic people), it really is jarring and feels like a complete design failure by not having the people all match the Mario aesthetic.
First thing that came into my mind was Sonic 06'.
I don’t like the city area’s art style either, as it seems to play against almost all of Nintendo’s design strengths by aiming for some level of realism, but it’s also just one of many worlds they’ve already shown. Hasn’t affected my hype levels one way or the other.
