Funny you mention a 940 in the context of “safe, old cars,” ‘cos it’s the quintessential “safe car,” right?

So much this, and the false dichotomy between “Old, fun car” and “new, boring car” is fucking annoying.

You don’t have to buy a minivan (but it will be more convenient). You can easily find modern, fun cars. Hell, if your budget allows have an uber-practical DD and a second modern fun car as well.

Bought a Grand Cherokee with a newborn and 2 year-old, and it was a pain in the ass getting them in and out. Most importantly, it wasn’t great for rear-facing them as long as possible.

Traded for a Pacifica and now my now 4 year-old daughter can hang her legs off each side of the captain’s chair, comfortably…

I’ve got a 2014 and we used to have a ‘12. A couple of things to note — Very, very, very few Volts have legitimately needed battery replacement. There’s a first-gen running around with over 400k miles on the original battery.

Volt in Chicago area here.  Driving without much thought to economy you’ll see ~40 miles range in nice weather and more like ~25 in the cold.

I’m not sure what gen Prius you drove, but if it was anything > 5 years old I’m not sure you were awake when driving it -- I’m biased, as a Volt owner, but most any review would have told you at the time the Volt was the nicer and better-performing driving experience.

I think your take is a bit extreme but would it kill them to offer some sort of at least partial electrification option?!  This would be a home run even just as a PHEV.

I’m not the target market but I’d much rather have an i8 than the 8 series (except maybe the M)... 

“Bigland” sounds like a new RAM trim level.

“Halfway across Texas” is a false equivalence though. 110 mi in good weather is probably 75 in the cold. That means someone in my particular use case, 35 miles outside a major city (of which there are TONS) is now dependent on finding charging to make a trip in and back.

Limited to 35 miles one way in the winter…
