I like how they leave Blanche’s gender completely ambiguous. Candela is clearly female in name and appearance. Spark is clearly Male. Blanche, in both name and appearance, has no traditional clues about their gender.

The filling meter attack method you mention: Yeah, that’s EXACTLY how the Monster Rancher video games worked. You waited in battle for your meter to fill up, and it went though different ranges that represented your attacks. You wanted to build up your Monster’s speed to take advantage of that.

The games laid it on pretty thick that they were lesbians. Pretty much all but directly said it. That said, the games were actually pretty good. A lot of trial an error sometimes, so you got to see the many ways you’d get killed.
