I'm guessing you don't commute via subway. When your phone can't find a signal it drains your battery. I've been using Airplane/subway mode for years on my android.

Why in the world would it seem "useless" if you have to establish a baseline? Anyone who has an ipad could set it up themselves. Then the parent whose kid falls of the monkey bars crashes skiing, or runs into someone playing soccer could close their Scrabble app and open this...
