I think the McCallisters were always intended to be upper-upper-middle-class, but we as a society were much less class conscious in 1990, so this element of the story received almost no attention at the time.

Uncle Rob was the one who paid for the trip to Paris. Clearly he was even wealthier than Peter.

My comment before was only referring to the theatrical returns. I don’t know how the movies are doing / will do on streaming or how Apple calculates their value there. I also don’t know how much Apple values winning awards or prestige. Netflix was making similarly high-price movies that barely got theatrical releases

One reason this is an article is because a significant group is very invested in the idea that The Marvels has been treated unfairly.

I’m sure the added competition from Aquaman 2 will have some effect, but I don’t know how much the audiences for the movies will overlap. Wonka seems well positioned to take advantage of Christmas, where for many viewers it becomes less important what you are dying to see, and more important what grandma, your teenage

I don’t think anyone has called them financial successes, but they were both distributed by Apple TV+, which is flush with cash, and it was pretty obvious they just put them in theaters for awards eligibility.

I’m unaware of anyone claiming either movie is a financial success (Flower Moon appears to be a solid critical success), but both of those movies were made for AppleTV+. The theatrical run is for awards consideration and whatever $$ they get is a bonus.

They seem to be super unpopular; there are a LOT of musicals (Mean Girls, Color Purple, Wonka) where the trailer almost completely elides the inclusion of musical numbers. Pretty grim if you can’t sell a musical on…being a musical.

DBE is definitely overly harsh - the better analogy is the Tom Cruise Jack Reacher movies.

It was such a terrific scene.  Both because of the homage to the movie as you note, but also because it revealed so much about Lorraine.  I mean, she’s still horrid, but you got a real sense of how she got where she is now, that she HAD to become this coldhearted, wicked person, just to make it as a woman in a male

“So, you want freedom with no responsibility. Son, there’s only one person on earth who gets that deal. A baby. You’re fighting for your right to be a baby.”

Lorraine in no way is a good person, but damn if I didn’t enjoy her calling Roy out on his bullshit. Baby, indeed.

Hair Spray is another as well as the upcoming Mean Girls movie.

“No, poor people are crazy, Jack. I’m eccentric.” -Dennis Hopper, Speed

She declares, “Make no mistake—my career was taken away from me.”

I kept misundersatnding this quote. Why would you need the girls to leave you alone about liking boys?

Anyway, commas can completely change but also clarify the meaning of a sentence. We should use them more.

“Who cares” is the correct take. But also, she “came out” herself when she said she likes girls as well as guys, so she wasn’t “outed” or “tricked” or anything. If she didn’t want to talk about her sexuality, she didn’t have to, but she’s acting like Variety duped her into it.

Depends on if you believe the other women who have said he hooked up with them and dumped them after a few weeks of months.  He ain’t the golden goose/good guy at all, but isn’t that par for the Bachelor course?

I don’t watch it but this is about to get very interesting.

Aside from maybe 5 or 6 "big" releases this year, most have been pretty big flops.
