Well, I didn't see much of "suffering / closer to god" stuff in "Lost", but I indeed hated the show as well. For different reasons. It was just horribly written / acted and a rip-off.

Jack Wilson (Palance) from "Shane". "I wouldn't push too far if I were you." He thought - as did everyone else - that he was the fastest gun. That is, until he faced Shane. His last thought was probably surprise or regret.

I was fortunate to have met Carl. I teared up at the end of "Contact" when "For Carl.." appeared on the screen. What a brilliant, nice man he was.
