I'm a Robert (named after my uncle) and there were a couple of others in my school growing up, but I haven't ever met a Robert who today is or would be under the age of 40. I really like the name, and the nickname is the best (Bob, quick and easy, and it's a palindrome!) I don't know why it fell out of favor.
It's a Hebrew name that's been around for a while (maybe centuries, for all I know.) I knew an Isreali woman named Aviva who would now be in her late 20s. Also, and I'm kind of horrified that I know this, one of the "stars" of the Real Housewives of New York is named Aviva.
