Running on max isn't necessary to out compete the console versions, if you you can get good frame rates on mid levels you will already be better then them in most games. So don't worry about breaking the bank, just build something decent that has room for upgradeability and put in better parts as money allows. Plus…

AMD will most likely have something like it out in the future or there might be a third party app that doesn't care what brand stuff you have in your machine. Nvidia is trying this now with the "Nvidia Experience" it will scan the games on your system then tell you how you should adjust them to get the most out of them.

Update 2: It will not let me download the Demo fully and it will not let me play the full HL2 it downloaded onto my comp.

Steam support just posted this to twitter "WARNING: The most recent HL2 update has some issues. We're working to fix this, you can pause the update for now. 예측하지 못한 결과에 대비하라..." that last bit translates to "Prepare for unexpected results ..."
