I’m with you on this one. Growing up (admittedly not in the US) I lived through the “don’t label me or put me in a box, I’m just me” movement, and I still agree with it. People fought to NOT be labeled and generalized as such, and now we’re creating more boxes and labels that people are demanding to be put into. Sure,

For starters, I don’t agree with the guy you are replying to, but I’m going to challenge you on something you just said to him.

If you’re a Lost fan who’s still mad about how the series ended eight years ago, maybe this reality show will fill the void. It is basically a sequel.

Absolutely. I think that political pressure on representation is the most effective thing you can do, in general, but if you have crappy representation or don’t have solid access to your representation, you gotta do what’s most effective for you. I would just be careful about what companies you throw money at, and

He’s not her boss.... the president doesn’t control congress.... just saying...

Well then maybe you can explain to me who is going to compel them?

It’s not an article. It’s an editorial. If it had been an article, Harron probably would have approached this with a little more nuance and a little less sledgehammer.

They actually don’t need to answer. At all. So the author’s approach to this was overall immature and self-defeating.

Clap clap. Well done, you.

Rather than throwing money at people/organizations, why not pressure your congressional/senatorial representative to change legislation such that this can’t happen in the future? I get that illegal immigration should be stopped, but this method is abhorrent. That said, what’s happening is legal. So change that.

To play devil’s advocate, what about US citizens who are parents and commit jail-worthy crimes? They go to jail and their children go where? Should the parents not go to jail because it separates a family?

When i suspended my Facebook account, I went through some serious withdrawal for a about a week or two. After that... welp.... not a lot. Much happier. Social networks are the worst.

The comment wasn’t directed at her, or others who had been assaulted. It was directed at everyone in the neighbourhood, seeing as there was a second attacker out there who had not been caught, according to the article. Please read the source material in context and you’ll see it.

Did you know that, according to the link, there was a second incident and second attacker, and the police were warning people to be aware of their surroundings because of that other, uncaught, attacker? They weren’t victim-blaming, they were asking people to be careful.

You’re right. “Questioning” is a dog whistle. People who vaccinate all but maybe one are ACTUALLY anti-vaxxers at their core. Looking at different side effects of different medicines is “cherry picking science”.

Sure it is. You denigrated:

Well, just like the anti-vaxxers you’re describing who have anecdotes that don’t accurately describe reality, your anecdotes on their motivations may not reflect reality either.

I don’t know that your anecdotes hold true over a larger population, but yes, you’re right that this makes the article nonsensical, which is why I was asking. “Anti-vaxxer” has become an insult, not a description, and not even an accurate insult OR description.

This is lacking context - is that the police’s entire statement? Is that their proposed solution? Because to me, assuming that they’re blaming the victim through that statement is the same as accusing someone of victim-blaming by saying “please be careful” or “be safe”.

The references kill me. Before we all lose our collective shit even more, can we please keep this in context?
