"Nuns" is a misleading translation, there was a historical female warrior class, they did fight very well, and in the game they are only above average in power, there are better stronger units.
They aren't the strongest unit in the game, and are very rarely used. They're raw stats are less than many other units and are meant to make up for their small unit size. Also powerful groups of the female warrior class is historically accurate and their presence had a significant impact.

Not really, Battle Nuns and Onna Bugeisha are pretty rare and their melee stats are increased in order to offset their small unit sizes. Their most useful for strengthening a specific, small area in the line, but I'm pretty sure the guy who wrote that rant isn't using units strategically as much as just picking what…
