I found it equally terrible in the books, tbh. He spent zero time with her and then suddenly develops a "monster in his chest" for her. It was really sudden and bizarre.

Mako is the worst main character of both Avatar shows, and while Legend of Korra is overall great, his relationship with Korra is the least interesting aspect of the show, plus drags Korra's character down.

My relationship with them is complex: I dislike them. Some people might think this is simple, but I dislike them on so many levels.
