The hospital I delivered at has them for free and it was honestly amazing. My (now-ex) husband was awful in the delivery room. I ended up telling him to leave for most of it. I don't know how I would have gotten through it without my doula. I had an epidural, and because my son had the cord wrapped around his neck I

As someone who had two awesome, drugged filled US hospital births (we won’t talk about my super shit Canadian hospital birth) I too, find doulas annoying as shit, but like you I’m feeling that quote.

I am another cynical, shallow doula. I am not at all crunchy. I don’t want women to give birth in a forest. And, if you have a homebirth, there sure as shit better be some real midwives there because I am not taking responsibility for catching your baby. I am quite happy with my un-crunchiness. I am so un-crunchy that

THIS. I had a doula, and she was amazing. She knew about a lot of things that come up during labor that I’d never heard of, so I was able to discuss them with my husband & make a decision about what to do if that came up — you know, calmly in my kitchen & not flat on my back while dilated to 9.5 cm & scared. She also

I’m a doula. My job is to support women in making their own informed choices about giving birth. I would say that is true for every doula I know, which is a fair few. It is not our place to offer advice, or to push an agenda. In fact it would be very foolish to do so as we have no liability to cover medical advice. So

I’m really lucky because my insurance covers a doula IN FULL. I have a midwife and will be giving birth at a hospital (the medical arm of my insurance co.) and they were like, “Oh, hey. You get a doula. It’s part of the service we offer.” Which is awesome and I wish everyone could have that option.

I’m a doula that works through a program that offers our services for free! We reach out to lots of nonprofits, so I end up working with lots of low-income moms, refugee populations, etc...Also, I would love a different name so I didn’t have to define my job every single time I tell somebody exactly what I do.

I’m sure some doulas cater exclusively to annoying crunchy rich people, but most of the doulas I know have very reasonable rates and specifically make their services available to women from all walks of life. My local hospital has a huge network of volunteer doulas that anyone can have present at their birth for free.

I think that there are shitty doulas who will pressure you into giving birth in the middle of a forest because that’s what is most natural, but I think that there are also a lot of really good ones.

I find doulas annoying as shit because of the whole my precious special natural ancient wisdom boutique birth thing and you know you have mommy-with-money privilege, right? and GET A REAL FUCKING NAME FOR YOUR JOB LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE but

I would hate to be forever judged for life decisions I made at age 18.

People smoke Oxycontin? No snark here, I’ve just never heard of the drug being used that way.

Eh, she got married, had a kid, stopped doing drugs, was more honest about how shitty their lives were, and then, got a job. That seems like a series of much better choices than the ones she made as a teenager.

What studies?

Sure, but sometimes you just get a headache for no real cureable reason and you just want the pain to go away. All you want is the symptoms treated.

Better to be sick and miserable than just sick? That’s silly. There’s nothing wrong with taking a pain reliever. Nobody is claiming they cure anything.

Read the book. Even better than the film.

Which is generally weird bc like, Germany as a whole responded AMAZINGLY to their terrible history and in my admittedly limited experiences, Germans I’ve met have been some of the most liberal, open-minded people ever.

You know that some people are both Jewish and German, right? There are tons of ethnic Askenazi (Jews from north of the Rhine from France and Germany) who have moved to Israel in our lifetime and identify with both nationalities.
