LOTS of lights. If you're shooting anything indoors get lots of lighting. And make sure all of it is the same color temperature, except for effect. Cameras need lots of light to have good color and no grain. If shooting inside in daylight, you'll probably need to cover your windows with daylight balancing sheets.

I'm glad you put planning first! If you think you can just wrangle some friends together and improvise a good short film... then you have a lot to learn. If you're really interested in telling a narrative story, writing is the most important step. "Writing" might mean thinking about the story for hours, then throwing…
