It's likely due to the 360's unified RAM structure (512mb pooled for system and vram). The PS3 has the same total amount, but it's split so developers can't allocate it as they like. I think that's why there were some issues with Skyrim and other games on the PS3.

Microsoft is a MUCH larger company than sony is (currently) what with sony constantly selling off or shutting down other arms of its business I don't suspect that their in a position to BUY anyone off.
