MLS stadiums have actually gotten smaller since 2000, when a majority of teams played in locations like Giants Stadium, Arrowhead Stadium, the Rose Bowl, Soldier Field, etc. Nearly all MLS teams now own or use smaller soccer-specific stadiums (usually around the 18k-27k mark).
