Blizzard has clearly stated that nothing during in-game matches is canon, simply because it would make no sense. They’re making a story for the sake of making a story. Nothing wrong with that, it’s world building.

It’s my theory that the current Overwatch game is a training simulation designed by Winston and Mercy to get the team back into fighting shape, including former outlaws that they have recruited into their ranks on account of desperate times.
