I'd recommend Java or PHP. Both are current languages with techniques that are transportable, and with massive amounts of online teaching available. Java skills might be a hair more transportable, though.
Also consider precision. If you spend time figuring out how to automate it, you should have, at the same time, ironed out any bugs, or errors. Using the automated methodology reduces the chance of mistakes.
Oddly I think Mac is best for real newbies who have the money. If you want to start fiddling with your system a bit, Windows might be better. If you really want to screw up your system, you might want to move back to the Mac.
